The spooky shadows and eerie creaking of a rickety old house are brought to life via lush CGI in Monster House. A young boy named DJ has suspicions about the house across the street and the cranky old man (voiced by Steve Buscemi, Fargo) who lives there. When the old man has a heart attack and is carried away by an ambulance, DJ thinks the danger is over. Unfortunately, as he, his friend Chowder, and a candy-selling prep-school girl named Jenny discover, the house itself has plansplans that include eating all the kids wholl be trick-or-treating that Halloween night. Monster House begins with some deliciously creepy scenes that will send chills down childrens spines (and may be too intense for younger viewers); animated movies rarely make such effective use of what isnt being shown. The animation is vivid and detailed (though CGI still has a ways to go in capturing the full range of human facial expressions). But like most horror movies, the anticipation of horror is much more exciting than the horror itself; as the secrets of Monster House are revealed, the movies thrills unravel. The noisy explosions at the end arent half as much fun as the slow twitches of a few blades of grass in the movies elegant beginning. Bret Fetzer More Monster House on Amazon.

In our current rough economy, who would swap a weekly pay check of $2,000 for a $600 one? Perhaps a dedicated Christian; like the person who just handed over his private tutoring company to his church.

John Jun, 23, gave his tutoring business to 180 Church, located in Union Square and Staten Island, recently. Now known as 180 Tutoring, located on Staten Island, Jun established his private tutoring business two years ago. He initially started out as a private tutor and turned it into a business when parents and students suggested the idea, said Jun. “One day, I found myself believing in what everyone else seemed to see and agreed that what we had to offer to the academic world was worth starting a business for. On a practical level, I had all the right ingredients to start business. It was so ripe,” said Jun. “There was a demand and I had all the means to operate. Building, transportation, material- I had everything I needed to make a business out of it.”

“180 Tutoring covers content that appear on the following standardized examinations: Math and ELA city/state-wide exams, SSHSAT, and PSAT/SAT. This includes various subjects in math, reading comprehension, writing, and grammar,” said Jun. “However, we are not limited to these as we also provide private assistance to our students who need help with other school subjects.”

Kimberly Chiu, 16, a junior at Susan E. Wagner High School, was tutored by Jun over the summer of 2008. Even before the tutoring business was officially handed over to 180 Church, students were aware that Jun was raising money for the new Manhattan church location, said Chiu. “I think it’s wonderful because it’s helping me and benefitting the church,” said Chiu.

Jun, an Americanized Korean with a welcoming smile, has been serving at 180 Church for the past five years. “Because I didn’t have any personal ambition for gain from the very beginning of starting this business, I gave the business over to church so that it could help fund the many ministries that I myself have greatly benefitted from,” said Jun. “However, it wasn’t just a ‘noble’ act. The business also benefitted when it was handed over to the church. The church provided a building in which classes could be held and legally the business was able to be recognized with the churches corporate ministry backing it up.”

When Jun first pitched the idea to Sam Kim, senior pastor of 180 Church, Kim thought it was a great idea because it would help both parties. “First, it was more of a practical decision more than anything else. Under a church/religious organization, you do not have to abide by board of education requirement teaching license for a tutoring business,” said Kim. “Simply because of the separation of church and State policy, John would have freedom to expand his business without the State imposing its values and regulations.”

Besides the obvious fact that 180 Tutoring brings in more income for the church, it has also provided many people at 180 Church, especially recent college graduates, with jobs, said Kim.

Fortunately for 180 Tutoring, the financial crisis has not affected business one bit. “We actually got more students during that time,” said Kim. The tutoring business is not the only thing that is left unaffected. “On a personal level, I believe that everything I need, food, money, shelter, and even personal needs are all provided for me by my ‘Father.’ Some call it foolish, but I wasn’t really personally influenced by our country’s economic problems,” said Jun. “Giving up my business was solely based on a desire to help and grow something I love.

Arthritis? Carpal-tunnel syndrome? A hand injury? If so, a New Jersey company claims it has invented a firearm just for you and that it has received federal approval to market the 9-mm handgun as a "medical device," perhaps even with its cost reimbursable to seniors by Medicare. Matthew Carmel, president of Constitution Arms in Maplewood, N.J., says the Palm Pistol is designed to be fired by people who have disabling conditions that prevent them from holding a normal handgun and pulling the trigger.

When it comes to Indian cooking / cooking with spices, I rarely (ok, up until this weekend, never) buy premixed spices. I always add my own quantities of each spice to whatever Im making. I learnt from my mom and she would also cook this way, meaning she wont use a briyani mix that you get sold at stores.
Over the weekend I was at a spice shop and saw a packet of tandoori chicken spice - all you had to do was add yoghurt and marinate, before grilling. I decided to give it a go - test it out and see if its worth buying. If you work full time and rely on convenience cooking, it would be ideal.
As per instructions on the the packet, added yoghurt to the spices and marinated drumsticks and thighs for a few hours in the fridge. I then baked / grilled it for about 25-30 minutes on 200°C.
This is what it looked like: (I expected it to come out slightly more red).

Ok - this was probably the most eventful day so far.
Started out of La Paz OK - we saw Jorge, an Argentinean on an old (1979) Kawasaki 660 - he's on his way back from a "short" ride from Buenos Aires to Machu Picchu and back.
Gas was hard to find on the way out - we wanted at least 90 octane fuel and to pay with a credit card - yeah right! Settled for 84 octane and paid in US dollars at a bad exchange rate.
The GPS was routing us back through Peru and when it finally found a route through Bolivia to Chile it was not showing the roads we were actually traveling on.
I then almost ran out of gas getting to the Bolivian border, which was very easy.
The Chilean border was further down the road and probably the most scenic border you'll ever see.
We arrived along with a big bus full of people... and got into the line that they were standing on.
Turns out we had to get a piece of paper from office number 1 who told us to go to immigration - house number 3 - who told us to go to customs - house with no number - who told us we were done!
We happily took off noting that there was a 4th step - police - which I assumed was further down the road. I also assumed that house number 2, agriculture and sanitation was for trucks carrying cargo.
15km down the road a check point. It did not look good when the officer called someone and talked to them for a couple of minutes.
We had to go all the way back because we had forgotten to get "a stamp". Marc asked if we could just do it there but the officer was stern and said that we had to go back - no way of getting through that point without going back.
So we back tracked - a very annoying thing to do on a trip - and got back to the border where we were told that we had not completed house number 2 nor house number 4 - we fled the scene - and that was VERY serious.
I explained that we were told that we were done and police check points usually are further down the road from the border.
He didn't really care and said that we would have to appear in court in Arica so that a judge could decide what course of action to take with us. I continued arguing that it was an honest mistake and that we had no intention of not following their procedures but the officer was
unmoved and started writing up our summons.
Another guy was being booked for having a mango in his car - he also had forgotten he had it - and was going to have to show up in court on the following day (Monday).
"Wait, isn't Monday a national holiday!?" said one of the officers.
So now not only we had to show up in court, we would have to stay an extra day in Arica to go to court on Tuesday!! I insisted in trying to make the problem go away right there to no avail. The officer filled out what seemed like 10 forms and instructed us to go to Arica and appear in court on Tuesday - so we're stuck in Arica on Monday - a Chilean national holiday - waiting for our court appearance on Tuesday 10am!
After making sure we had completed all the required steps we were finally riding in Chile - and a beautiful one I must add.
Halfway down the road we stopped at this small "complex" where you could get fresh juices, lodge, camp, go on archeological tours and even do astronomy at night. We walk in to find a Canadian girl and four children eating at a table watching TV through a PowerPC
Macintosh computer. The "man of the house" was baking some bread. We were welcomed and got some juice and a sandwich. We were told that all the electricity comes from solar panels and wind powered generators.
Very interesting place.
Further down the road, 40km or 1/2 hour to get to Arica I start feeling my rear a little wobbly. I kept on thinking in was merely psychological but at one point I stopped an my fears were confirmed...
A FLAT tire!!!
I proceeded to remove the wheel from the bike and getting to the inner tube when some bikes stopped by to see if we needed help. At that point things were looking good buy we gladly accepted one of the guys help to remove the tire from the rim. They soon left and we were left
there with the task of replacing the bad tube with the spare I was carrying.
I've changed plenty of bicycle tires before but a motorcycle tire is an entirely new ball game. The amount of strength you have to put on it to place the tire back onto the rim is pretty awesome.
I couldn't believe that the tire would simply plop back on to its proper position once you inflated the tube - which we were trying to do with an electrical compressor connected to the bike's battery. It did not look promising because of the rate at which the compressor was
filling up the tire and because of the position of the wheel on the rim.
So I removed the tire from the wheel again and started it all over thinking I had done something wrong.
Turns out I was doing everything correctly... but the spare tube I had was either damaged as well or I damaged it in the haste of putting it back into the rim!!
So we were stuck in the middle of the road with no way of fixing it there on the spot.
I crossed the road and went up to a couple that was talking in front of a parked truck. Turns out they were having a fight or a big talk - they were both crying! So I diverted to talk to some other people to see if they had a cell phone so that I could call one of the guys who had stopped previously.
"Sure but there is no cell phone coverage here!"
Back on the bike Marc had pulled out the satellite phone! Perfect!
Not so... we kept on getting invalid number...
The sun set and it got dark...
Plan B - put the wheel back on the bike and push it to the other side of the road and leave it there for the night - next morning we would come with new tubes and a mechanic to help us out.
As we were waiting to cross the road 2 motorcyclists and a car stop to see what happened...
"Wait here - I am going to get my pick up truck and we'll take the motorcycle into Arica!"
HA!!! 5 seconds later they would have missed us!
20 minutes later we put my motorcycle on the back of his truck and he takes us to his house - well - his garage - which had about 20 cars and some motorcycles and a bunch of people helping out.
"Leave the bike there for the night and tomorrow we'll deal with it. Take a car so that you can take your stuff to the hotel and that can drive around - or do you want to take a motorcycle?"
I settled for the Mercedes (M-class) where I put all of my gear and then proceeded to follow him on his truck and his son on another car to the hotel. Marc followed us on his bike.
At a gas station Marc and I just laughed at the whole situation - this day was getting more interesting by the minute.
At the hotel Carlos negotiated a special deal for us and told us that he would stop by in one hour to take us out for dinner!
11:30 we hop back onto my new ride and follow his son who came pick us up on his car.
We arrive at the restaurant - probably the only one in town open so late on a Sunday night - and wait a little for Carlos to arrive.
Turns out Carlos did a motorcycle trip to Brazil when he was 21 - 4 months on the road as well - so he understood our pain.
As the conversation went on we told him that I needed new break pads and that Marc needed a new visor for his German helmet - both hard to find parts in this area.
No problem! They whipped out their cell phones and started making calls. A friend of theirs races KTMs and is going to find these parts on Tuesday morning and take them to the airport so that they arrive in Arica Tuesday early afternoon!!
We tried to pay the bill but his influence over the waiters was greater than ours and even though Marc had given them his credit card at some point during dinner, Carlo ordered the waiter to not take it and paid for dinner as well!
WOW - what a day and how lucky we were to have run into them! Endless generosity.

Heart Will Go On, Celine Dion. This was very easy to get sick of as well; cloying and over-the-top and insisting on its own epic greatness. Blurg. The music's pretty; I have a string quartet version that didn't make it onto the soundtrack (from a promo CD) that's lovely. It doesn't need Celine Dion or lyrics to work. It sounds better without them.
My Favorite Nominee: Ray of Light, Madonna. I don't have much to say about it, but it works.
My Favorite Single That Year: Flagpole Sitta, Harvey Danger. That song just makes me feel awesome. I love it.

1998
Winner: Sunny Came Home, Shawn Colvin. Music from the nineties has an overwhelming percentage of suck, more than any decade. It's like America went through menopause and could only listen to this kind of sappy pap. I hate this thing, and thanks to the Crap and Crap Lite stations being played where I worked constantly, I heard it way too many fucking times.
My Favorite Nominee: MMMBop, Hanson. It's a default choice; it's the one I think is okay whereas I despise all the others (especially "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone" by Paul Cole, which should be classified a form of abuse).
My Favorite Single That Year: The End Is the Beginning Is the End, Smashing Pumpkins. I love that they used it in the Watchmen trailer.

1997
Winner: Change the World, Eric Clapton. I'm not much of a Clapton fan, really. I did like this song, although it's association with the awful Scientology-promoting John Travolta film Phenomenon counts against it a tad. It's not earth-shaking, but it's a solid, not-unpleasant song.
My Favorite Nominee: 1979, Smashing Pumpkins. Haunting, beautiful, and bittersweet.
My Favorite Single That Year: 1979, Smashing Pumpkins.

1996
Winner: Kiss from a Rose, Seal. I think it's a beautiful song. I used to hear it a lot on the radio as I was driving to work in the winter at a very dark 5 in the morning. That's the perfect time to hear it. It'll take you on a trip.
My Favorite Nominee: Kiss from a Rose, Seal.
My Favorite Single That Year: Kiss from a Rose, Seal.

1995
Winner: All I Wanna Do, Sheryl Crow. Blurg. Not a song I like.
My Favorite Nominee: Streets of Philadelphia, Bruce Springsteen. Beautiful, sad, and seething with quiet ange, disappointment, and acceptance of fear.
My Favorite Single That Year: Streets of Philadelphia, Bruce Springsteen.

1994
Winner: I Will Always Love You, Whitney Houston. Piece of overplayed shit. Especially in comparison to the original Dolly Parton song, which is perfect.
My Favorite Nominee: The River of Dreams, Billy Joel.
My Favorite Single That Year: Fields of Gold, Sting. Kind of a cheesy choice, perhaps, but I can always hear it and always love it. It's simple and pretty.

1993
Winner: Tears in Heaven, Eric Clapton. It doesn't quite hold up for me, honestly, but it's miles better than fellow nominee "Achy Breaky Heart." It's a very pretty song, but not my favorite of Clapton's.
My Favorite Nominee: Constant Craving, k.d. lang. I like the passion.
My Favorite Single That Year: One, U2. One of the most achingly beautiful songs I've ever heard.

1992
Winner: Unforgettable, Natalie Cole. The fact that the Grammys honored that hacky, schlocky, sympathy-begging, cloying bit of grave-robbing Natalie Cole did to cash in on honor her father is as sad as it is unsurprising.
My Favorite Nominee: Losing My Religion, R.E.M. It was overplayed, but if you listen to it now, it sounds almost fresh again. It really is just a good song.
My Favorite Single That Year: Crazy, Seal.

1991
Winner: Another Day in Paradise, Phil Collins. Preachy, annoying, and not even the best song from that Phil Collins album. (Actually, I just checked and sadly, it is. I despise "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven," and "I Wish It Would Rain" just sounds like a rip-off of "Wish You Were Here" with Clapton on guitar.)
My Favorite Nominee: Nothing Compares 2 U, Sinead O'Connor. Of the sappy, preachy, sad sack songs that were nominated this year, this is the one that's actually a good song. (Also, "U Can't Touch This" was nominated this year, but come on, man.)
My Favorite Single This Year: Enjoy the Silence, Depeche Mode. Now there's a love song.

1990
Winner: Wind Beneath My Wings, Bette Midler. I hate this song, and my dad pissed me off by playing it at his wedding reception for his mother, which I specifically told him not to do because it was such a fucking cliche. He said he wouldn't; he did. Wow, my grandma must have been one of 10 million special woman so uniquely honored that year. It's the equivalent of buying your dad a tie on Father's Day.
My Favorite Nominee: The End of the Innocence, Don Henley. Chance is right on when he calls it deceptively angry. It adds some world-weariness on top of that, too. Beautiful song.
My Favorite Single That Year: A Little Respect, Erasure. I usually come out on the side of pop, I guess. Although besides the catchiness, I think the lyrics are beautiful. One of my all time favorite lyrics comes from this song: "What religion or reason could drive a man to forsake his lover?"

1989
Winner: Don't Worry, Be Happy, Bobby McFerrin. I always liked this song, but it sure wasn't the best of the year. I think part of it was the novelty of McFerrin doing the whole thing a cappella. Which is admittedly neat.
My Favorite Nominee: Don't Worry, Be Happy, Bobby McFerrin.
My Favorite Single That Year: Sweet Child O' Mine, Guns 'n' Roses. The most perfect song they ever recorded.

1988
Winner: Graceland, Paul Simon. I'm not a big fan of this song for whatever reason. It's nice, but it's okay. I wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio station. Really, I just don't dig Paul Simon's solo work that much.
My Favorite Nominee: Back in the High Life Again, Steve Winwood. Admittedly, mostly because it reminds me of better times. But it's pretty.
My Favorite Single That Year: With or Without You, U2. Grammy nominated the more ubiquitous and much less beautiful "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," a song I don't like. "With or Without You" is real passion.

1987
Winner: Higher Love, Steve Winwood. Meh. It's okay.
My Favorite Nominee: Sledgehammer, Peter Gabriel. It's a lot of sucky nominees this year, but this is a great song.
My Favorite Single That Year: True Colors, Cyndi Lauper. A beautiful love song, especially for people who don't feel so great about themselves. I guess I like genuine songs about understanding, I would say.

1986
Winner: We Are the World, USA for Africa. Of course. Nothing else was going to win this year. As a song, it's okay. The real fun is trying to pick out all the singers. I mean, you know, it's Really Important, but it's just okay.
My Favorite Nominee: Money for Nothing, Dire Straits. One of their couple of songs I like. One of my favorite guitar solos.
My Favorite Single That Year: Take on Me, a-Ha. Pop perfection in all of its catchy, bubblegum glory.

1985
Winner: What's Love Got to Do with It, Tina Turner. There's genuine force behind it (although I think "Private Dancer" is her best song), real heartbreak.
My Favorite Nominee: Dancing in the Dark, Bruce Springsteen. At his most pop. I love this song.
My Favorite Song That Year: Time After Time, Cyndi Lauper. Gorgeous and simple.

1984
Winner: Beat It, Michael Jackson. Not much of a surprise, I guess. And it's a good song. Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo alone...
My Favorite Nominee: Flashdance... What a Feeling, Irene Cara. All of the nominees this year are pretty good but nothing I feel especially attached to. This is one of those cheesy pop songs I like.
My Favorite Single That Year: Our House, Madness. One of the most perfect songs I've ever loved.

1983
Winner: Rosanna, Toto. It's okay.
My Favorite Nominee: Steppin' Out, Joe Jackson. That one always got me and carried me off.
My Favorite Single That Year: Under Pressure, Queen David Bowie. Everything that's shitty about society in four and a half minutes. "And love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the night."

1982
Winner: Bette Davis Eyes, Kim Carnes. Meh. I don't feel strongly either way.
My Favorite Nominee: (Just Like) Starting Over, John Lennon. What a great song. I can't believe it lost to Kim Carnes... greatness versus... well, nothing worth commenting on. As usual, John Lennon just nails life and relationships with this song.
My Favorite Single This Year: In the Air Tonight, Phil Collins. Collins used to be a man who just knew darkness and how it felt to be depressed and angry.

1981
Winner: Sailing, Christopher Cross. Put me to sleep, why don't ya?
My Favorite Nominee: Theme from New York, New York, Frank Sinatra.
My Favorite Single That Year: Let My Love Open the Door, Pete Townshend. As great a song as he ever wrote for the Who, his best solo work, and one of his most genuinely passionate songs.

1980
Winner: What a Fool Believes, the Doobie Brothers. I'm not a fan of theirs. This is probably the one song of theirs I'd say I liked. Still, Record of the Year? Feh.
My Favorite Nominee: I Will Survive, Gloria Gaynor. I like the sweep of it.
My Favorite Single That Year: Video Killed the Radio Star, the Buggles. Another perfect pop record.

1979
Winner: Just the Way You Are, Billy Joel. It is a pretty song, however much Joel claims now that he wrote it accidentally. Is he ever going to stop apologizing for having good commercial instincts? One of his less angry songs, too. I've always liked it.
My Favorite Nominee: Baker Street, Gerry Rafferty. Or as I always used to call it, "That One with the Great Saxophone Part."
My Favorite Single That Year: Who Are You, the Who. My favorite song of theirs, for reasons I can't quite define. But it's a great damn song.

1978
Winner: Hotel California, the Eagles. I hate the Eagles, but I'll give them this one song. This is a damn good song.
My Favorite Nominee: Hotel California, the Eagles.
My Favorite Single That Year: Hotel California, the Eagles.

1977
Winner: This Masquerade, George Benson. I couldn't tell you how this goes.
My Favorite Nominee: Afternoon Delight, Starland Vocal Band. It's delightful.
My Favorite Single That Year: Somebody to Love, Queen. A beautiful epic of emotion. One of my favorite songs ever.

1976
Winner: Love Will Keep Us Together, the Captain Tennille. It's okay.
My Favorite Nominee: At Seventeen, Janis Ian.
My Favorite Single That Year: Young Americans, David Bowie. That one packs a wallop and makes "Love Will Keep Us Together" sound pretty frivolous.

1975
Winner: I Honestly Love You, Olivia Newton-John. I honestly detest this cloying, overwrought song.
My Favorite Nominee: Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Elton John. You want passion? There you go. Skip the other song entirely.
My Favorite Single That Year: Cat's in the Cradle, Harry Chapin. Hey, hey, it's a cliched choice for a reason.

1974
Winner: Killing Me Softly with His Song, Roberta Flack. It's pretty. It's also soporific.
My Favorite Nominee: You're So Vain, Carly Simon. A nice kiss-off song.
My Favorite Single That Year: Mind Games, John Lennon. Gorgeous.

1973
Winner: The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, Roberta Flack. I've always found this song kind of overwrought.
My Favorite Nominee: American Pie, Don McLean. Come on, how could you pick a different one? (Although I've always loved Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again (Naturally)," a deceptively bleak and saddening song.)
My Favorite Single That Year: Let's Stay Together, Al Green. You want to get laid? You need some Al Green music.

1972
Winner: It's Too Late, Carole King. I can't place it off the top of my head, but I've never liked Carole King's as a singer.
My Favorite Nominee: My Sweet Lord, George Harrison. It's not much of a song, really, but I didn't like any of the other nominees much.
My Favorite Single That Year: Imagine, John Lennon. I can't believe this was never nominated for Record of the Year. What the hell?

1971
Winner: Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon and Garfunkel. An undeniably beautiful song.
My Favorite Nominee: Let It Be, the Beatles. Still Paul McCartney's most beautiful effort.
My Favorite Single That Year: Let It Be, the Beatles. Seriously, they didn't pick this?

1970
Winner: Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In, the Fifth Dimension. Definitely a good song.
My Favorite Nominee: A Boy Named Sue, Johnny Cash. It's funny and Cash delivers it well. I'll always pull for Shel Silverstein.
My Favorite Single That Year: Suspicious Minds, Elvis Presley. His final masterpiece, one of his best songs (in my top five).

1969
Winner: Mrs. Robinson, Simon and Garfunkel. Good but not really special.
My Favorite Nominee: Hey Jude, the Beatles. A masterpiece.
My Favorite Single That Year: (Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay, Otis Redding. One of the most quietly perfect songs I've ever heard.

1968
Winner: Up, Up and Away, the Fifth Dimension. What a lame choice. I mean, it's a cute song, but what a lame choice at this point in music history.
My Favorite Nominee: My Cup Runneth Over, Ed Ames.
My Favorite Single That Year: Can't Take My Eyes Off You, Frankie Valli. But that's the tip of the iceberg; this year produced, off the top of my head, "Heroes and Villains," "All You Need Is Love," "I Was Made to Love Her," "Light My Fire," "A Whiter Shade of Pale," and "(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman," and Grammy nominates "Ode to Billie Joe"? Lame, lame, lame.

1967
Winner: Strangers in the Night, Frank Sinatra. A good song, one I always liked.
My Favorite Nominee: Strangers in the Night, Frank Sinatra.
My Favorite Single That Year: Good Vibrations, the Beach Boys. Another incredible year for rock, and the Grammys can only acknowledge "Monday, Monday." What a foolish institution to pass over the greatness they did.

1966
Winner: A Taste of Honey, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. The best of the several thousand versions that seem to be out there.
My Favorite Nominee: Yesterday, the Beatles. As beautiful a song as was ever written.
My Favorite Single That Year: Like a Rolling Stone, Bob Dylan. Transcendent.

1965
Winner: The Girl from Ipanema, Stan Getz João Gilberto. A lovely little song that I've always liked as background music.
My Favorite Nominee: Downtown, Petula Clark. I forget just how beautiful this one is.
My Favorite Single That Year: Don't Worry, Baby, the Beach Boys. Perfect.

1964
Winner: Days of Wine and Roses, Henry Mancini. Nothing song from a rather turgid movie.
My Favorite Nominee: Dominique, the Singing Nun. That's painful to say, but the nominees this year are just that bad. Again, zero acknowledgement of rock and roll or even the great folk music from this time.
My Favorite Single That Year: Surfer Girl, the Beach Boys. Hey, Brian Wilson just knows how to hit me where it counts. Teenage love deified.

1963
Winner: I Left My Heart in San Francisco, Tony Bennett. A beautiful song.
My Favorite Nominee: I Left My Heart in San Francisco, Tony Bennett.
My Favorite Single That Year: Telstar, the Tornados. That one always takes me right off and makes me love being alive.

1962
Winner: Moon River, Henry Mancini. I'm never sorry to have heard this song. It's always beautiful, and always necessary.
My Favorite Nominee: Moon River, Henry Mancini. Infinitesimal second: "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck.
My Favorite Single That Year: Stand by Me, Ben E. King. The best time to hear this song is in the still of the deep night.

1961
Winner: Theme from A Summer Place, Percy Faith. The music is pretty.
My Favorite Nominee: Georgia on My Mind, Ray Charles. It's insane that this didn't win. This is the very definition of a beautiful song.
My Favorite Single That Year: Georgia on My Mind, Ray Charles.

1960
Winner: Mack the Knife, Bobby Darin. I like this song; it's fun as hell to sing along to.
My Favorite Nominee: Mack the Knife, Bobby Darin.
My Favorite Single That Year: Sleepwalk, Santo Johnny. Another great late night song.

1959
Winner: Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare), Domenico Modugno. Okay. I can't believe anyone does this song better than Dean Martin, personally. I don't believe I've heard this version.
My Favorite Nominee: The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late), David Seville. I know, I know, but I love this song. It's a Christmas staple to me. It reminds me of being a kid and spending the lead-up to Christmas at my grandmother's house. It's a cozy song for me.
My Favorite Single That Year: Summertime Blues, Eddie Cochran. As vital a song as there is, considering how much rock continues to borrow from it. And more than that, just a catchy tune.

Havent had a great deal to post of late, as things are fairly quiet here, and I have been trying to get some extra rest as the Smallest is waking every 2 and a bit hours during the night, as she is yet to recover from this horrendous cold and congestion that she has had for the last week.
Activities are mainly focused on the home right now, I will soon be making preparations for Christmas, and will be posting the recipes for a gluten free Christmas Cake - once I have made it myself of course! I am also trying to build up a little stock of hand crafted presents, so that we can really keep within the Christmas budget. We always try to keep it reasonable this time of year anyway, but everything helps - I have such a store of chutneys and tonnes of fabric to use up - so its a good opportunity to make good use of them.

There was an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" in which Larry David desperately tried to give away a sweaty $50 bill he got from a friend's sneaker. The money was legal tender, but nobody wanted it. The Yankees know the feeling.
On Friday, it will be three weeks since they barreled into the free-agent negotiating period with a six-year, $140 million offer to starter C.C. Sabathia. His response has been silence. Derek Jeter had already called Sabathia by then, and Alex Rodriguez has called him since. Yet the offer sits there, an anomaly in a depressed free-agent market, begging to be accepted but met with indifference.
Brian Cashman, the Yankees' general manager, seems prepared to do something about it. According to an Associated Press report, Cashman has scheduled a meeting with Sabathia before the winter meetings start on Monday in Las Vegas. The report also said Cashman has met with Scott Boras, who represents the free agent starters Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez, and first baseman Mark Teixeira.
Typically, the Yankees do not need to beg free agents to accept. The Yankees' strategy is usually to identify their target, overwhelm him with an early offer, intimidate the competition and get their man. They have done the first three things, but Sabathia is still a free agent.
"If they went to Sabathia with $140 million, he could go back to them and say, 'Give me $170 million and I'm there,'" said one major league general manager, who was granted anonymity so he could freely discuss another team's plans. "He hasn't done that. The Yankees aren't his first choice. Why isn't he jumping on their offer?"
The Yankees have continued to negotiate with Sabathia, and they would like to sign him next week. But they have not sensed the usual enthusiasm that accompanies a splashy Yankees offer.
Mike Mussina signed quickly after the 2000 season, and a year later, there was never much doubt about Jason Giambi's intention. Both times, the Yankees had just been to the World Series. Both players wanted to be in New York or in Mussina's case, somewhere close to his Pennsylvania home -- and both had a veteran agent, Arn Tellem.
Sabathia is a different case entirely, and the reason he is stalling, to those who know him, is just as the general manager suspected: his first choice is not New York. Sabathia is from Vallejo, Calif., near the Bay Area, and it is well known that his preference is to play for a team on the West Coast. But the money is elsewhere.
"It's not that he doesn't want to be a Yankee; that's not it at all," said a friend of Sabathia's, who was granted anonymity because Sabathia had not authorized him to speak on his behalf. "It's just the aspect of being out there, his family, that kind of stuff."
Sabathia and his agent, Greg Genske, have made no public comments lately. Genske has kept a low profile since taking over Jeff Moorad's agency when Moorad left to run the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2004. Sabathia is the most prominent free agent Genske has represented; he was fired in February by Manny Ramirez, who hired Boras.
The presence of Boras looms over Sabathia, too, because of Teixeira, the free agent first baseman for the Los Angeles Angels.
Teixeira is seeking a 10-year contract worth $200 million, and Boras often waits until deep into the winter before making a deal. If the Angels sign Teixeira as they insist they are trying to do -- they would probably not sign Sabathia. But if Teixeira leaves, the theory goes, they might.
That seems unlikely, especially after the Angels offered salary arbitration to starter Jon Garland, who may very well take it after a poor second half. But the hope of an overture from the Angels, apparently, explains Sabathia's delay.
The Yankees have long understood that Sabathia might be reluctant to sign, but they assessed the market and believed no other team could approach what they could offer. The Milwaukee Brewers, the team Sabathia carried to the playoffs last season, have offered $100 million for five years. Just as the Yankees suspected, there are no other known suitors.
The San Francisco Giants have been aggressive this winter, guaranteeing more than $16 million for next season to shortstop Edgar Renteria and relievers Jeremy Affeldt and Bobby Howry. They also have five years left on Barry Zito's seven-year, $126 million contract, and annual debt service to finance their ballpark.
In other words, there may not be much money left for Sabathia certainly not $23 million per season, and probably no more than a $90 million guarantee. Brian Sabean, the Giants' general manager, said as much on Thursday.
"We're not actively out there swimming with the sharks," Sabean said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Until Sabathia is convinced there are no lucrative offers on the West Coast and with Cashman coming out for a visit, that time may be soon -- there is no urgency for him to sign with the Yankees. Hal Steinbrenner, the Yankees' controlling partner, said on Nov. 21 that the Sabathia offer was "not going to be there forever."
But with no other starters having signed with the Yankees not even their own Andy Pettitte it is hard for the team to have leverage until the winter meetings begin on Monday.
The Yankees seem content to let A.J. Burnett sign with the Atlanta Braves, who may offer $60 million for four years with a vesting option for a fifth year. Two Boras clients Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez are probably the next-best free agent starters, with Ben Sheets and Brad Penny coming off injuries.
"I'm not getting anxious," General Manager Brian Cashman said on Thursday, before the AP confirmed his travel plans. "It's part of the process, that's all."
It is a process being stalled by Teixeira, Sabathia and the economy, with teams that depend on credit suddenly turning frugal. The Yankees' thriving cable network and new stadium give them more cash than their rivals. They proved it to Sabathia three weeks ago, and now they are intensifying their effort.

Although NBC is denying it (so far), speculation on the Internet is rampant that David Gregory will be the next moderator of Meet the Press, a move that is about as energizing as a triple dose of Ambien with a side order of Tylenol PM.
Gregory, affectionately nicknamed by the outgoing President, the extra-tall newsman came to prominence for posing some pointed questions to the White House a few years back. But despite these few flashes of actual journalism, he also clearly showed his affection for everything Bushie, an affliction that blossomed into full-fledged hackery when MSNBC rewarded him with the awful Race to the White House program (now called 1600 Pennsylvania Ave).
Gregory is one ofthe chief offenders of creating false equivalencies. You know how it goes.... McCain says Obama is a socialist, says heassociates with terrorist and questions his patriotism. But wait, wait arguesGregory, Obama had a negative ad too that questioned the effectiveness of McCaintax policies. So thats a fair, equal Apparently so, according to Gregory.
False equivalency. Its the mothers milk of todays traditional media and David Gregory has been raised on this method of distorting the news.s how it goes:If you have one dude who says X and another guy who says its not X, thats journalism. Present two sides and declare yourself neutral, thats all it takes. No need to question either side about the validity of their points, probe their reasoning or take a stand on the facts (Yes, reporters,I know this may come as a shock but there are such things, commonlyknown as facts, which can be reported astruths and are not open to debate).
Gregory also is a proponent of forcing some notion of conventional wisdom down the throats of viewers (even when those pesky facts would indicate that that wisdom maybe is not so wise). Almost nightly in the months prior to the election, David Gregory would, in his most concerned newsguy voice, raise issues of about the Obama candidacy. Every day, he would ask Is the sheen off the Obama candidacy? and Why cant Obama get over 50 percent in the polls? Even when Obama was leading consistently by several points in the final weeks of the campaign, Gregory would pop every night and say Why cant Obama close the deal? His nightly whine was so predictable, after the election, I expected him to mournfully ask, Why couldnt Obama get all 538 electoral votes?s a lazy, formulaic reporter. Think Im too harsh? Check out this write-up of Gregorys razor-like butter knife questioning during a stint as MTP host in August of this year. (And lets not forget, Mr Gregorys famed stint at interpretative dance with none other than Karl Rove.)
In the last several months,Tom Brokaws simplistic, phoning-it-in stewardship of Meet the Press put the once-veneratedSunday mainstayinto a coma; with David Gregory at the helm, call the mortician... this television program is a goner.

I'm honored that a friend of mine has asked me some questions about my cooking tactics. I feel like I'm usually the one gleaning info from others and it's a honor for me to be a help to others. I've said before that cooking exclusively (rather than eating out or using packaged mixes) is a discipline that comes over time with perserverance and practice. Our family eats out maybe twice a month, sometimes less, which leaves me to do the cooking. I enjoy cooking immensely and it's a pleasure for me to fill my family and guest's bellies with the best food (economically speaking) possible.

So, I will dedicate a few posts to Kara and to others that may want a peak into my kitchen as I give away some of the tricks of my trade, which aren't much so please don't hold your breath in anticipation. :-)

First of all, I make a menu for the week every Sat or Sun, depending on if I go to the grocery store on Saturday or Monday (my usual grocery days). I usually cook 4-5 nights of the given week, the other 2-3 are leftovers or quick throw together meals. Here is my menu for the week:

Sun - Homemade pizza
Mon - Roast (Beef, Potato, Carrots, Onion) (it was very yummy, by the way)
Tues - Swiss Skillet Chicken, Veggie, Rice
Wed - Leftover Roast, Salad (church at 6:30)
Thurs - Chicken Soup, Salad, Grilled cheese
Fri - Leftovers (we have a commitment at 6pm)
Sat - Homemade Pizza (SEC Championship game)
Sun - Church Dinner

Before I make my menu, I look to see what is in the house so I purchase minimal things at the store. I also look at my calendar to see when I will be home to cook. I use a lot of factors in determining what I make when, which I'll probably save for another post. But, I had a roast and chicken in my freezer, rice in my cupboard, leftover swiss cheese and white wine from turkey day, lots of carrots and celery (for chicken stock for soup), and I always have pizza crust on hand (I make 3 dough balls at a time, large enough to make a 12-inch pizza). So, I just bought fill-ins from the grocery store to complete my evening meals.

I usually get my recipes from Allrecipes.com. I search for recipes based on ingredients I have in my house, sort the results by ratings, and usually choose recipes that have been rated high. I also read some of the comments, which include some "tweeks" to the original recipe. I usually keep looking through recipes until I eventually find one that I can use depending on all the ingredients the recipe calls for (I oftentimes make substitutions).

I'll be making this recipe for Skillet Chicken Supreme tonight, though I'll be calling it Swiss Chicken Skillet Supreme since I will be using swiss cheese rather than mozzerrella.

At least some of the biological risk for childhood asthma and allergies traces back to the womb, new research suggests.
Both the order of birth and even the way a baby is delivered have a significant impact on the long-term strength of a childs allergic defenses, scientists say.
Some Scientists said it had evidence indicating that when a specific genetic marker for allergic and asthmatic development is present among a first-born child, it appears to raise the risk for allergic conditions as far as 10 years down the road. However, when the exact same marker is present in a familys second or third child, the gene seems to have exactly the opposite effect — actually lowering such risk.
Among four year-olds attending Head Start programs in New York City, those who had older siblings were more likely to experience respiratory symptoms including an episode of wheezing in the past year than those who were oldest or only children. Children with at least two older siblings were also 50% more likely than other children to have gone to an emergency department or been hospitalized overnight for breathing problems. These findings from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health were recently pre-published online in the journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy.
Another team of researchers suggested that regulatory cells associated with proper immune function may be impaired in babies delivered by Caesarean section. They think the manner of delivery could actually influence immune system development and ultimately asthma/allergy risk could be due to the fact that vaginal labor provides beneficial exposure to birth canal microbes that simply arent available to a C-section baby.
I find this whole thing very interesting, what do you think about birth order and/or delivery method and the asthma and allergy relation.
